The capsule bag collection "Return bag to 1472" was created as part of the 5th semester projects in winter 2022/23 in cooperation with Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and the fashion company Fynch Hatton. The collection shows possibilities of upcycling and recycling faulty returned goods that are disposed of and destroyed en masse in the fashion industry.
The concept, developed in line with SDGs 12, 13 and 17, combines upcycling and recycling of returned polo shirts, which have been recycled into new sustainable textile surfaces through various processes. The bags developed were made using innovative technologies such as 3D product development, with the aim of achieving zero-waste production. The project also involved working with Prodia, a workshop for people with disabilities, which recycled the polo shirts into new textile surfaces. In addition, the company TURNS-back to good provided a yarn made from recycled old clothing for the weaving process.
The names of the backpack "Denys" and the bag "Blixxen" are based on the story of the Fynch Hatton company, which was inspired by the film "Out of Africa" (1986). In the development process of the collection, the requirements for a timeless, practical and innovative design for a long product life cycle in the sense of a closed value chain were in the foreground. The aim of the project was to find different sustainable and innovative approaches to dealing with the masses of returned goods from fashion companies. In addition, the solution approach is not limited to the fashion sector, but also represents innovative solutions for the use and handling of textile surfaces in other industries, such as the automotive industry.
