We, Ramona Möllers and Charlotte Weber from W_M Designstudios, in collaboration with Hochschule Niederrhein and supported by ACT and Fynch Hatton, recently hosted a unique and creative workshop at Marurui Primary School, which engaged 50 enthusiastic children. Guided by Geni, a playful mascot created from repurposed jeans, the workshop aimed to teach the students how to transform old clothing into beautiful new fabrics through the art of hand loom weaving.
Throughout the workshop, we organized the students into groups based on various themes such as Ocean, Desert, and Safari. Each theme helped inspire the children to create unique and colorful weavings. However, the activities extended beyond just crafting; we incorporated singing, dancing, and painting to cultivate a dynamic and creative space for the children to express themselves freely.
The handwoven fabrics will be fashioned into pencil cases, equipped with school essentials, and given back to the children, completing a cycle of sustainable creativity.
We are grateful to everyone who participated, especially the children, whose creativity and enthusiasm illuminated the workshop. This project was a profound reminder of the joy and impact of teaching young minds about recycling creatively. With ACT's supportive role in logistics and resources, and our direction at the helm of content and execution, we are excited to replicate this success in future projects and expand our reach to more schools and communities.
